Le Festival — 2009

From 15th June to 15th August 2009, in the streets of Cannes.
From 1st July to 28th August 2009, at the Palm Beach Casino.
Desires and pleasures...
The International Festival of Fashion Photography, a unique rendezvous dedicated to fashion, takes place in Cannes for its 7th consecutive edition. Monumental pictures are exhibited in the town: in the Croisette in Cannes, as in the heart of the neighbouring palm grove, the Port Canto rose garden where is presented, as each year, the Festival guest of honour’s work as well as an exhibition of his/her large format printings. This year, the International Festival of Fashion Photography is pleased to pay tribute to the world-famous great fashion photographer Guy Bourdin who, eighteen years after his death, still influences generations of fashion photographers.
In the meantime, the Palm Beach Casino, main partner of this event, hosts on its cymas the 2009 selection of contemporary photography creation. Seventeen fashion photographers from different backgrounds present their creations on 1 m x 1.50 m printings. On the terrace of the Palm Beach Casino, a selection of 32 photographs among Guy Bourdin’s work shows the great strength of his pictures, printed on 3 m x 3 m sheets and put on spotlighted structures, so that the exhibition can be seen day and night.
The jury of the 2009 edition of the International Festival of Fashion Photography is composed of key figures belonging to the world of photography such as Laurence Benaïm, Stiletto editor, Peter Knapp, photographer and artistic director, Jean-Luc Monterosso, director of The European House of Photography in Paris, and Guy Boyer, Connaissance des Arts editor. They will give two awards according to the creativity, imagination and daring of the artists’ work – their ability to fire one’s imagination. A 2009 Fashion Photography Prize will be awarded to a confirmed artist and another 2009 Fashion Photography Prize will be given to a Young Talent.
The directing and the plan of this event give the artists the space to rediscover the splendour of their work. These pictures, which interact with time and the audience, remain the universal marks of our history, our feelings as well as artistic creation.
We can remember Steve Hiett’s feeling of happiness when he saw his large format pictures at the Palm Beach Casino, Jeanloup Sieff’s enthusiasm when he was informed, a couple of months before his death in 2000, that he would be the guest of honour of the first International Festival of Fashion Photography, Gilles Bensimon’s smile, who was eager to come and take part in this festival again and again...
Fashion photography, freeing itself from the pages of the magazines for the monumental open-air exhibition gallery, fully blossoms and asserts
itself as the real creation of an artist and of desire, whether seductive or provocative, from the viewpoint of the walkers, the professionals, or the fashion and art photography amateurs.
